2003: Rewriting the law
In 2003 students in a social work policy class "rewrote" the Louisiana rape law, which excluded spouses from prosecution for intra-marriage rape and sexual battery. Students researched existing laws, drafted a bill, found an author for the bill, lobbied legislators, and provided testimony. In August 2003, their bill was signed into law, and the students received a national award for influencing state policy.
