SW STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Social Work Student Association (SWSA)                  Mailbox # 1

What is SWSA?
A student-run organization created and maintained both for the benefit of its members (because social work students need some support) and for the community (because social workers are usually pretty involved, community-wise).

What does SWSA do?
SWSA hosts a combination of social events and community service projects throughout the year. Last year, for instance, we had several socials outside of school, social work tailgates, and diversity movie nights. Members also hosted and/or participated in several community events, including:

Thanksgiving canned food drive
Clothing donation for a Katrina effected family
“Field Day at the Field House” (the first SWSA fundraiser for LSU’s Forever LSU campaign)

In addition to all of that, we designed t-shirts, bumper stickers, and mugs for SWSA!

Alpha Delta Mu Honor Society (ADM)                            Mailbox # 2

Gamma Delta Chapter

Purpose
The purpose of Alpha Delta Mu Social Work Honor Society is to advance excellence in social work practice and encourage, stimulate and maintain scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly social work. The organization also promotes the recognition of graduate level social work students excelling in academic and leadership skills, while assisting master’s level social work students with essential materials to become increasingly competent and knowledgeable in the helping profession and visible to the community for which they advocate.

Motto and Colors
ADM’s motto is to be an “advocate of the people,” and our colors are black and silver.

Requirements
To join ADM, members must maintain a 3.50 GPA in all social work courses, be in good standing with the university, and have earned a minimum of 9 semester hours earned from an accredited graduate school of social work.

Benefits
ADM recognizes the academic excellence of achievers. Benefits of ADM membership at the commencement ceremony include the ability to wear honor cords if a member has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher, and to wear a medal if a member has maintained a 4.00 GPA throughout all courses taken in the graduate social work program.

Goals
ADM seeks to provide resources to graduate students in the social work program by offering seminars, presentations, and other contacts with professional personnel from the social work field. This year, ADM will provide information to those students interested in pursuing a thesis. The organization will continue to sponsor the “Mentor Program” in which a foundation year student can choose to be paired with an advance year student in ADM to gain support and encouragement. ADM wishes to promote cohesion and unity between the two years of students in the LSU Social Work Program. ADM will also host study groups for comprehensive exams in the advance year of the graduate social work program at LSU.

National Association of Black Social Workers                   Mailbox # 4

Membership in NABSW aids in student educational and social development while enhancing your graduate school experience. Here, you can find encouragement and support as you face and deal with the challenges of being a graduate student. Participation in the NABSW is a great way to get involved in the community through volunteering; it provides students with opportunities to take on leadership roles; membership also promotes strong peer relationships outside of the classroom setting.

Our goals for this year include making the organization more visible within the school and the community and doing more social activities and fundraisers.

NABSW membership is open to all students. If interested, please contact Keisha Moore at kmatt11@lsu.edu.
